Hardcore act God Complex have recently released a new track “Breeding filth” accompanied by a dark gritty video. The song is the first release from the upcoming EP “Created Sick” being released later this year.
The music of God Complex isn’t that of your standard hardcore band- they use inspiration from all over making it hard to pin point their exact subgenre because of their diversity. For me, they are a band that can fit into any line up and appeal to a lot of people, capturing genres from all over. However, what has been repeated in God Complex, is the intense feeling of grit and excitement which has been demonstrated in their new song “Breeding Through.”
I have read that the song has been heavily influenced by news articles on the chemical weapons attack on Syrian town of Khan Shaykhun in 2017. The song offers a realistic, fearful insight into what is going on in the world today whilst demonstrating a strong political statement regarding current events. The song starts with a hard hitting drum beat pieced with simple and effective heavy chugs, followed by low fry screams. This all begins immediately; their is no prolonged build as they plunge us just straight into their madness. Adding to this madness is the chaotic drum fills and licks which are added to create an even messier feel. However, what stood out for me what the powerful beatdown that completely caught me off guard. It may have been random but it fits with feel of the song and adds variety to the song. As the song ends we are left with the guitar which rings out and overall it is a good break from the chaos that unfolds during the song.
The feel of the song blends well with the video- the video is black and white, fast paced, gory and graphic. Its one of those videos that makes you feel uncomfortable watching, with the shaky camera movements, scenes of warfare, decay, religious imagery and the band members moving manically to the music. The video has been made extremely well, capturing the excitement of the song and the dark tones regarding the meaning of the song.
All in all, God Complex have done well, they have realised an exciting song and video with a strong political statement. You cant get anymore hardcore than that.
