Review: Crown Ov Scorn, by Glasgow Metalcore act, Revolve

Glasgow Metalcore act released a new single, Crown Ov Scorn. A song released as a warm up to their debut album, Dragged Into extinction. This was the first release since their successful Ep, A prelude to Extinction. I was impressed by that EP, the dark overtones, the chaotic-ness and how the EP was well put together and a general exciting listen. The Metalcore revival has been prominent in hardcore in the last year, with more bands going in that direction. What I love about this new wave of Metalcore bands is that there is a lot you can do with it; many bands find themselves branching out. This is a quality of Revolve I liked, I feel they are creating a sound and statement for Glasgow hardcore. Being a strong contender for debuting the talent of Glasgow and the spirit of hardcore. All while throwing in discord breakdowns, mosh sections and the other menacing qualities of this new wave of Metalcore.

The change I noticed with Crown Ov Scorn would have been the more mature sounds that were coming from the track, a more 90s Metalcore sound reminiscent of Arkangel. The track starts rather easily for the listener, a simple build up guitars and drums, creating tension. However, the track immediately comes out of nowhere. The track goes chaotic and immensely comes in with rapid double bass from the drums, which then swiftly flows into a breakdown.

The track is short, but packs a lot into it. Their isn’t a range in vocals styles, just the high reaching screams, but for a song like this, it wasn’t particularly needed. “Suffering is no longer temporary,” is spoken in the middle of the track. Subtle spoken word that just adds to the track. Followed by, “I'm addicted to the pain,” before the song strikes again with a menacing riff and discords, with a melodic riff in the background making the track sound more layered.

On first listen, I was impressed with the track, as I said, it’s a warm-up for the album, giving us an insight into what is to come. With fantastic production, well-made structure and a song that is exciting to listen to on multiple listens. With any music scene that has a lot of bands involved in it, is easy for a band to simply blend in, what I like about a lot of bands in the UK is that they know how to branch out and create a distinct sound. Glasgow hardcore is successfully putting itself on the map for UK hardcore and I am excited to hear music from Revolve and to hear and review the album.
