REVIEW: 'Yahzi' by Suppress

Updated: Sep 5, 2018

Having been released for a couple of months now, Yahzi is the first release from the new Second City Hardcore band, Suppress. Suppress is composed of members from many different Second City band members which makes them the ultimate super group. On vocals is the Birmingham legend Keiran Murphy, the recognisable figure in the scene having been active in it for many years. To add, the Concrete Selective's very own Jack is on guitar and Sam on drums. Lastly, joining them on guitar and bass Cauldron's vocalist Frazer and Perry. On sight, Suppress appear to be the next best thing in the scene, but ultimately the EP does wonders at speaking for itself and cements that idea thoroughly.

It's short. It's sweet. It's a groove-driven EP with sounds similar to bands like Bent Life, King Nine and Expire. There are plenty of sing-along moments that are littered throughout where only the vocals and drums sound; it's easy to envisage fists in the air as crowds shout the words back to them. I love chugging guitars and the drum licks. The whole duration is extremely catchy and fuelled with moments worthy of stomps and absolute bops.

Although every song is striking in its own way, the song that stands out the most for me is 'Fade'. The effortless time signature changes along with the galumphing guitars, experimental drum fills and licks and vigorous bass makes for a great listen which is bound to have you itching to move. Not forgetting to mention that the vocals are also comparable to old school Hardcore bands like Madball, which creates a nostalgic twist to the music and an added charisma.

If you haven't listened to Yahzi yet and can spare a few minutes, I highly suggest you do. It's fun, it doesn't take itself too seriously and is extremely exuberant in its nature. There is something for everyone to enjoy and the three songs are only a taster of what is to come.
